This half-day trip packs two of Morocco's most photogenic landscapes into a single afternoon. You leave Marrakech after lunch, head into the rocky Agafay Desert — a stone desert that feels like the Sahara but is only 40 minutes from the city — then pass through the lower Atlas Mountains and a traditional Berber village before returning after dark.
The Agafay is not a sand desert. It is a vast, barren plateau of cracked earth and scattered rocks, with the Atlas Mountains as a permanent backdrop. The Itinerary
Berber Women's Cooperative
The first stop is an argan oil cooperative run by Berber women. You see the traditional process of cracking argan nuts and pressing oil by hand, sample the results, and learn the difference between culinary and cosmetic grades. It is a genuine working cooperative, not a staged demonstration.
Agafay Desert
The drive into the Agafay takes you through increasingly barren terrain until the city disappears entirely. You stop at a desert camp where the views stretch unbroken to the Atlas peaks. This is where you spend the evening — the sunset over the stone desert is the visual highlight of the trip.
Dinner & Fire Show
Dinner is Moroccan: salads, harira soup, chicken tagine with vegetables, couscous, and fruit. Vegetarian options are available. The meal is served outdoors as the sky darkens, followed by a traditional fire show with music and dance.
Mint tea and water are included throughout. The atmosphere is relaxed — this is not a high-energy party but a calm evening in the desert.
Return to Marrakech
The drive back to your hotel takes about 40 minutes. You are typically back by 9:00-9:30 PM.
