What to Expect
A 3-day journey linking two of Morocco's imperial cities through the heart of the Sahara. You leave Fez heading south through the Middle Atlas, cross the cedar forests near Ifrane, and descend into the dramatic gorges of the Ziz Valley before reaching the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi at Merzouga.
The highlight is the overnight desert camp — a night under open skies in the Sahara, far from light pollution, where the Milky Way feels close enough to touch. The next morning, you watch the sunrise paint the dunes orange from the back of a camel.
Day three takes you west across the Draa Valley, past the kasbahs of Ouarzazate and the Aït Benhaddou fortress — a UNESCO World Heritage site you'll recognize from a dozen films — before the final push over the Tizi n'Tichka pass into Marrakech.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Fez → Ifrane → Ziz Valley → Merzouga
Depart Fez in the morning. Stop in Ifrane — sometimes called Morocco's "little Switzerland" for its alpine architecture and clean streets. Drive through the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas, where you may spot Barbary macaques, and arrive at Erg Chebbi by late afternoon. A camel caravan takes you into the desert camp for sunset and a traditional Berber dinner with live drumming under the stars.
Day 2: Merzouga → Todra Gorge → Dades Valley
Sunrise over the dunes is worth the early alarm. After breakfast at camp, drive to the Todra Gorge — towering canyon walls rising 300 meters above a narrow riverbed popular with climbers. Continue to the Dades Valley, known as the "Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs," where you spend the night in a traditional guesthouse perched above the valley floor.
Day 3: Dades → Ouarzazate → Aït Benhaddou → Marrakech
Visit Ouarzazate — Morocco's film capital and home to Atlas Studios, where Gladiator and Game of Thrones were shot. Then explore the fortified village of Aït Benhaddou, a UNESCO site whose earthen architecture has stood since the 11th century. Cross the High Atlas via the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 meters, arriving in Marrakech by evening.
Who Is This Tour For?
This tour suits travelers who want to experience Morocco's geographic diversity without the stress of self-driving. The roads between Fez and Marrakech cross mountain passes and desert tracks that are manageable but tiring without a local driver who knows them.
It works particularly well for first-time visitors who want the greatest hits — desert, mountains, kasbahs — in a compact timeframe. Couples and small groups get the most out of it.
Families with children under 6 should note that the days are long (6-8 hours of driving with stops), and the desert camp is basic — shared facilities, mattresses on the floor.
Practical Tips
- ▸ Clothing: Layers are essential. The desert drops below 10°C at night, even in summer. Bring a windproof jacket and a scarf for sandstorms.
- ▸ Camera: Charge everything before the desert — there are no outlets at camp.
- ▸ Cash: Bring small bills for tips. Drivers, camel handlers, and camp staff expect 20-50 MAD each.
- ▸ Motion sickness: The mountain passes are winding. Sit in the front seat and bring medication if needed.
